Looking to learn about the filmmaking process? Welcome to our Storyboarding Workshop for Beginners! Join us at Portland Digital Dabblers Events for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn all the tips and tricks to create a stunning and unique storyboard with other artists. Expect a lot of learning, laughs, and support from all who attend. At the end of the workshop each student will have the opportunity to “pitch” their scene which gives folks the opportunity to see how each artist interprets and visualizes the script.
Whether you’re a beginner or looking to enhance your skills, this workshop is perfect for all levels. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to boost your storytelling game!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Whether you’re just starting out or an expert looking for a fun project, this workshop is for you!
Join the digital dabblers and make your very own storyboard! This week we will be boarding a scene from Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back. Next time we will be boarding a scene from The Princess Bride! If this workshop gains popularity expect it to become a regular event with many different famous movie scenes.
We’ll cover:

  • Together we’ll read through a movie script and make storyboards just like on a production.
  • You’ll even have an opportunity to pitch your boards and get useful feedback.
  • No previous experience required! We’ll cover what you need to know about framing your shots and visually communicating with your audience.
  • The goal is to have fun, meet fellow artists, learn useful skills, and make art together!

This workshop will be held on May 18th and June 1st at the Digital Dabblers Events building from 11:30am-2:30pm. (We’ll be using different scripts for each session)

All ages are welcome, but attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

What you’ll need:

Paper/pens/pencils will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own digital tablet OR paper/pencils/etc. If you need to use one of the lab computers make sure to arrive early if you need a device 🙂

Make your way to the entrance (in-between My Fathers Place and Slow Bar) and search for DIGITAL DABBLE on the door buzzer. We will be upstairs (follow the sign) PLEASE CALL FOR ASSISTANCE IF YOU NEED TO USE THE ELEVATOR.

Agenda

  • Meet your Classmates Coffee Social (11:30 – Noon)

    • Coffee social and snacks with fellow classmates! Come hangout while enjoying Daniel’s premium Chemex coffee, Aeropress, or honey lavender tea with lo-fi jams and a relaxed setting.
  • Introduce the basics of storyboarding perspective, rule-of-thirds, etc.

    • Jacob will begin the lesson and walk you through story-boarding theory as it relates to setting a scene, creating a mood, and telling your story. We will cover symmetry vs. asymmetry, perspective, rule-of-thirds, etc.
  • Drawing your boards!!! (aka the fun part!) (1-2pm)

    • Jacob will let the class loose to begin drawing their boards based on famous movie scenes. Each student will be provided with the same script and will have time to make the scene the way they envision!
  • Students Showcase their Boards! (2-2:30pm)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to know how to draw to attend this event?

    • Absolutely not! This event (and all events with the Digital Dabblers), are in a safe, supportive, and judgement free zone. The point of this workshops is to have fun, learn about storytelling, and practice drawing at any skill level.
  • Is there parking and is it free?

    • There should be street parking around the training center and it is FREE on the weekend. If you take public transit there are options that should get you very close.
  • What happens if I show-up late?

    • We have a 30 minute buffer built-in to this event to accommodate late arrivals. Shhh, just don’t tell anyone! 🙂 If you are more than 30 minutes past the starting time of this event the doors will be locked. This is to respect the time of your classmates and the instructor.
  • Does the software cost money?

    • No cost! If utilizing a digital art tablet for this workshop we teach concepts that apply to free/open software.
  • Do you provide computers/equipment?

    • There are currently 3 lab computers available on a first-come first-serve basis.
  • How do I access the training? And is your office ADA Accessible?
